- What We Do
Who We Are
The
Health Facilities Association of Maryland is a voluntary trade
association, chartered in 1948 as the Maryland Nursing Home
Association. It is the oldest and largest long-term care
association representing skilled nursing facilities in Maryland.
At
present there are over 260 licensed nursing homes in the State.
HFAM represents 150 of these facilities, consisting of over 19,000
beds and employing well over 18,000 Marylanders. HFAM is an
affiliate of the American Health Care Association, the largest
long-term care association in the nation.
HFAM
represents comprehensive nursing, assisted living,
sub-acute, and transitional care units, all of which are licensed in
Maryland. Every type of ownership is represented -- from
individual and multi-facility to nonprofit, church and government.
What
We Do
HFAM
collectively serves the long-term care industry and
represents its members through
communication and cooperation with more than 30 state, county and
local governmental agencies. Much of the work of the professional
staff and 25 member board of directors
involves dialogue with these agencies on proposed laws and
regulations. HFAM mobilizes its resources of long-term care
professionals to aid in the education and awareness of the state
legislators throughout the 90-day Maryland General Assembly session.
Consumer
support and assistance is another HFAM activity. Informing the
public on how to choose and enter a long-term care facility is a
major concern of HFAM. Assistance is given to citizens who are
experiencing problems associated with a stay in a long-term care
facility as well as guidance on services, fees, policies, patients
rights, and related matters (like finding
a facility that is best for their needs ).
HFAM
has an internal Quality Improvement Committee that aids and supports
members in on-going efforts to maintain the highest standard of
quality care. Members are provided with timely
information and processes on how to implement quality improvement
programs in their facilities. HFAM monitors this progress by
analyzing the annual survey results of all facilities in Maryland.
This analysis helps to recognize trends in the survey process and
identify areas that may need special attention in a health care
facility.
Long-term
care professionals face the challenge of keeping pace with advances
in health care, business management, and personnel relations.
HFAM organizes and
sponsors a full calendar of seminars, courses, and workshops
throughout the state geared to every discipline in the health care
facility. Many of these programs are sponsored and supported
by government agencies and private groups. All educational
seminar attendees receive a certificate of attendance and continuing
education credits.
